Introduction
In Lesson 3 we go to the Notebook computer to get it on the network and online. This computer is also running Windows XP and it has the PC Card wireless network adapter. Once again we show getting it online with both configuration utilities, but with this network adapter we have to switch between the utilities manually.
Recommended Networking Hardware
Hello and welcome to Section 4, Lesson 3. We're on our notebook computer, it's running Windows XP and this is the computer that we installed the PC card wireless network adapter into the PC card slot.
Configure Windows Networking
If we look down here by the clock, in the tray, we can see that we
have the Windows wireless networking icon and says we're not connected.
We also have the makers configuration utility saying we're disconnected
from a wireless network. Before we can connect to the network we need
to right-click on the Windows networking icon and go to open network
connections. On this computer we have two wireless network connections.
That's because this notebook has a built-in wireless G adapter which is
the first one here in the list. If we just hover over it, it tells use
the name of it and that it is an 802.11g network adapter. If we hover
over the second one, it's our netgear adapter which is wireless N.
We need to right-click on it and go to properties. We'll scroll
down and find the Internet protocol TCP/IP and go to properties. We're
making sure that obtain an IP address automatically and obtain DNS
server address automatically is checked okay out of these. Close down
the network connections folder.
We've already moved over key.txt file from our USB thumb drive to
the desktop and we'll open it up, click and drag across, right-click
and copy it, so now it's in our clipboard.
Connecting with the Makers Configuration Utility
First we will use the makers configuration utility to connect to the
network. We'll double-click on it, if we go to the networks tab it will
scan for networks and its found three networks of our neighbors and
ours which is homenet. We'll highlight it, it identifies it as a
wireless N network. Down at the bottom we'll click Connect and we're
taken to the settings page. We'll call the profile homenet. Its already
detected the WPA2 PSK using the AES encryption which is good. We'll
right-click and paste in our security key and click apply. If we scroll
down, we are connected to the wireless network.
Lets make sure we have an Internet connection. Once again will open up Internet Explorer and we are online.
Disabling the Makers Configuration Utility
Next we're going to connect to the network using just a wireless
configuration utility built into Windows. In Lesson 2 when we
right-click on the makers configuration utility there was an option to
switch to using the zero configuration utility that's built in Windows.
This is a Netgear wireless network adapter and its utility does not
have that option, so were going to have to do it manually in Windows.
We will exit the utility and we've lost our Internet connection. To
re-enable the wireless configuration utility built in the Windows we
need to go to start and run and in the box we need to type in
services.msc and click okay.
What we're looking for is at the very bottom.
