Introduction
In Lesson 4 we go to each of our computers, verify our networking and file sharing settings are correct and make changes when necessary. We then share several folders and printers on each computer. We'll connect to the shares in Lesson 5.
Recommended Networking Hardware
Hello and welcome to Section 5, Lesson 4. In this lesson we're
going to cover real-world sharing. What this means is we're going to go
to each of the computers that we've connected to the router. We're
going to check the firewall, make sure it's off. Check the computer
name and workgroup. We'll check the list of protocols in Windows
networking and finally we will share files and printers on each
computer.
Then in Lesson 5 we're going to go back to each computer and browse
the network making sure we can see all the computers and all of the
shared files and printers we set up. We'll connect to the shared
folders and make sure we have access to them and we'll install the two
shared printers so we can print across the network.
It's important to remember that when we share our files and
printers we are only sharing them with other computers that are
connected to our router. No one on the Internet can see our shared
files and printers because they are hidden behind the router's hardware
firewall. The security key that we entered into the router and on each
of our computers keeps the neighbors from getting on the network, so
it's all very secure.
Sharing on the Family room Computer
We're going to begin on the family room computer. This is the
computer with the USB wireless network adapter. First we need to make
sure that the Windows firewall is off. We'll go to Start, search for
firewall, click Windows firewall and it is off. We also have Norton
Internet security installed on this computer. We need to make sure it's
firewall is off as well. It says the firewall is secure so we need to
go to the settings, web browsing, personal firewall and turn off and
will turn off permanently.
Next we need to check the computer name and workgroup we'll click
Start, right-click Computer, go to properties. We'll go to 'advanced
system settings', 'computer name' and the computer name is 'Family' and
the workgroup is set to 'Workgroup' and that's correct. If you wanted
to change the name worth the workgroup was incorrect we'd click
'change' and here you can make changes. We'll close down System
Settings.
Next we need make sure that the network settings are correct. To do
that we'll right-click on the icon for Windows networking, down by the
clock. Go to Network and Sharing Center, click 'Manage network
connections' we'll find our wireless network connection, right-click on
it, go to Properties and we have our list of clients services and
protocols. Since Norton Internet Security is installed as a semantic
network client and the rest is default for Windows Vista. We need to
make sure that the Internet protocol version 4, Properties, is set to
obtain an IP address automatically and obtain DNS server address
automatically. It is so that's good.
On your computers you need to pay attention to the icons look like
this. This is the icon for protocols. In Windows Vista if you have
protocols other than the Internet protocols version 6 and 4 and the two
link layer topologies. You need make sure that those extra protocols
aren't set to use file and printer sharing. If they are it can cause
problems with sharing between your computers. If on your computers, in
Windows Vista, you see more than the 4 default protocols that ship with
Windows Vista, what you need to do is click cancel out of this and in
Windows Vista in order to get to the Advanced Settings to check for the
bindings you need to press alt on your keyboard which will give you the
File, Edit, View, Tool and Advanced. We need make sure the wireless
network connection is highlighted, go to Advanced and click Advanced
Settings. What you are looking for is the bindings. If you see
something here other than the Internet protocol version 4 and 6 under
File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks you need to uncheck it.
If you skip this step, there can be problems with sharing files and
printers between your computers. Everything looks okay here so we'll
just cancel and close down the network connections.
We're back in Vista's network and sharing Center. We'll start checking the settings from the top and I see a problem here. Our network is set the Public and that will keep us from sharing files and printers with other computers. We need to click Customize set it to Private, Next and Close. Under Sharing and Discovery
