64 bit Windows doesn’t install on the $500 PC

Postby chime » Fri Jan 29, 2010 10:35 am

I am trying to install the 64 bit version of Windows 7 Pro on the $500 PC and it gets hung during the installation process.

Is the hardware incompatible with the 64 bit version of Windows 7?

How do I troubleshoot?

Thanks.

It is compatible. Where is the install stopping and is there an error?
Thanks,

The first message is: "Windows is loading files ..."
The a progress bar appears and when the loading is done the next message is
"Starting windows"
After that the Windows startup screen appears and the system hangs.
(No log-in dialog.)
It doesn't respond to "Ctrl + Alt + Del" or any ather key or key combination.

Thanks,

What I would try is to minimize the number of device you have installed. Disconnect everything from the except the monitor, keyboard and mouse and power cable. In the computer take out any extra add on cards, other than the video card. Only one video card. If you've already installed a second one, take it out. If you've installed a media card ready or anything similar, disconnected it from the motherboard and see if you can then get into Windows. You may need to reinstall after removing the extra hardware. That should get you into Windows. Then add the hardware back in. One at a time is best. This should let you narrow down what was causing the problem. If you're inpatient you could try it all at once. Let me know.

Michael,
the PC doesn't have anything "extra", I cannot unplug or uninstall anything.
I don't know where to go from here. How can I troubleshoot this?

OK. Well you should rule out the Windows 7 install disc as being the cause. Can you get another copy of Windows 7 or do you have another operating system you can try installing?
Thanks,
