Internal Components

The internal components are the parts of the computer with which we are least familiar. Though you use them everytime you're on a computer, they are hidden from us.

Not only are they hidden from view inside the computers case, they are hidden by the operating system and the programs we work with.

This is done to make the computer easy to use. To build a new computer, or upgrade an existing computer, we must learn about these components.

Don't worry, it's not as complicated as you might think. The internal component lessons take each part in a computer one by one and explain its purpose, how it works, how it relates and connects to each of the other components.

External Components

The external components are the parts of the computer with which we are all most familiar.

Since we come into contact with the mouse and keyboard and see and hear the monitor and speakers they are well understood and don't require any explanation.

The external component lessons cover each with a emphasis on what features and specifications to look for when buying parts for your new computer.

Installation

This is the hands-on part of building a computer. You may be nervous at first, but go through each of the lessons and you'll see that it's really pretty easy. It's all about following the steps.

We'll begin by going over the parts we'll be assembling to make the computer. Next, you'll learn how to install the RAM and CPU onto the motherboard and install it into the computer case.

Next, we'll install the cooling fans into the case. Then we'll configure and install the hard drives and CDDVD drives.

We'll connect the data cables between the drives and motherboard, then install the video, sound, ethernet and modem cards into the system.

Last, we'll connect the power cables and power the computer on. Be sure to watch all of the lessons before assembling your computer.

Computer Setup

In the computer setup lessons we'll cover the BIOS or Basic Input Output System setup.

Next, we'll install Windows XP, which is the operating system we recommend for most home computer.

In lesson 3 we'll install drivers for some of the components Windows didn't recognize and partition and format 2 of the hard drives.

Lesson 4 covers installing and setting up Windows Vista from start to finish.

In lesson 5 we install a 2nd video card to enable SLI in our computer for faster gaming graphics.
